While there are several games I consider influential to my game making process, I’ll give a shout out to at least two of them.

The first of which is the Shining series on the basis of both the interface style and for being a KISS principle advocate, especially in the SRPG installments.

Another one would be an old Allegro RPG called Fenix Blade, and that’s in regards to the discovering that one person in their spare time can make a game like that. And while it never made it passed the playable demo stage of its development, I continue to be impressed with what it did have to offer in terms of mechanics, the lighting and shading, and the plot.

I’ve noticed a lack of love on your site here and I think I should throw you guys some serious love for what you are all doing here with these podcasts. I just want to let you guys know that I look forward to your podcasts and tutorials as a student who is still learning how to do this thing called game design. To know that there is a community and even a frickin’ PODCAST about game design is really exciting. I mean, I read alot of books about this and that but to hear it from people that are in the trenches and are trying to accomplish what I want to accomplish with the same engine I am….it’s encouraging and makes it feel like I’m not wasting my time with a non-3d engine. So kudos guys! Keep it up!

As there are many, many games I could attribute to my inspirations here, I will only name a few. Starting with Final Fantasy III/6 SNES.

Final Fantasy III was the first RPG game in that format to make me actually notice the music score, as it plays a huge part in how you feel for the heroes. The music, for that day, was incredible. The characters (for the most part) were fairly deep, and the play was absolutely balanced.

Dragon Warrior 4 has to be mentioned as well from the NES days. Although I had played all the Dragon Warrior games, 4 stands out because of it’s ability to make you feel for the heroes even though they are separated into chapters. DW4 did a great job of telling the whole story in micro pieces to have it all come together in the end. Also, in that age, I think it was the first with passive EXP (IE people in the wagon still gained EXP even though there weren’t in battle directly).

To simply name a few others: Metroid Prime has to be in there, as well as Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire, Super Mario RPG, any of the Legend of Zelda games.

Really any source of entertainment that I can build my story writing skills with I would use as an inspiration.
